The story of my life

Hi everyone! My name is Jonathan andianto and I am 20 years old. I am from Lippo Cikarang and I was born in Jakarta on September 23, 1998. Before I tell you my story, let me ask you a question like have you ever thought that there are many kinds of things you have ever felt before but now all the things we had done already become memories in your mind? And this happened to me on June 11 where the graduation day was held in Graha Bethany Lippo Cikarang. A little bit about me when I was a senior high school, I actually was a quiet person so I only had friends but not many at that time. The first thing that I remembered was when me and my best friends at the same class were always laughing together, studying together, hung out together and so many things that we could do when we were in senior high school. Sometimes, there is a situation when I really miss that moment, for instance; my friends and I were always laughing or talking to each other when the teacher came late to the class. I remembered the moment while my friends and I were ever being stupid together, especially in mathematics subject. Honestly, my friends and I were really bad at mathematics and the funniest thing that ever happened in my life was we used to laugh and mock each other when our mathematics teacher gave the result of our quiz’s score like we used to compare our score like who got a really bad score among us. Sometimes, I also remember the moment when my friends and I ever got involved “after school” so at that time, our teacher did not allow us to go home cause we were asked to study more as it was only a matter of time when try out exam day came. In short, my friends and I finally were graduated with a good result and of course, all of my friends were so happy and all of my friends decided to go holiday together before we started our new journey in university life. In short, all those things that I talked above since I was in the senior high school has already become an unforgettable moment in my life since a graduation day. On June 11, there is a sad moment that happened when my friends and I took a picture together and the part of the sad moment except from took picture together, we just realized that the things we had done before already become an unforgettable moment in our life.

Overall, after all that moments already ended, I decided to continue my study in President University. The reason why I am studying in President University until now because I believe that I can develop myself to be a better person. Like stated in my previous blog about “About me”, I was a quiet person as I used to spend my hours in front of my computer like playing games, watching lots of videos on YouTube, reading news on the internet when I was in senior high school. But, everything has changed when I entered President University and I started to become an outgoing person and tried to connect with people as much as I could by joining the organization in President University. Honestly, I feel so grateful to study here because I can meet lots of people with a different culture so I can develop myself to be a good person who learns to respect all people in my surroundings. Besides, I also feel grateful to study here because I can improve my English skill as well cause so many foreign students who study in President University so really motivates me to study more in English, especially in speaking skill. Actually, there are lots of things that I experienced during my university life, especially as a third student. Some of them already stated on my previous blog regarding “About me” even until what I want to be in the future. Like my previous blog, my dream is to become an entrepreneur and one day, I really want to have my own business in the future. Overall, based on what I have been through during my university life in President University is the moment that I will not forget in my life and I am so glad that I can study and also be able to build my character at the same time in this prestigious university.

To be honest, there is something that I would like to share to you and it is about my personal goal.  I have set one goal for myself and one of them is to graduate cumlaude. The reason why I want to graduate cumlaude because I want my parents happy and proud of me and I also want to be a role model for my brother because I believe that the competition in the future will be tight and of course there will be so many people who smart and  also there will be tons of people who graduate in the future and we simply can assume that the competition will be very tight and of course the technology will keep moving forward. So overall, I really want to motivate my brother to study hard and make him open his mind about the future.

Week 10 – Business Intelligence: Databases and Information Management

Hi everyone! On this blog, I would like to share to you guys about what I have learned and understood about database and information management. But before that, one thing that we should know about is that data is really important as data really helps to make better decisions. In addition, I also learned about database management system and how is important is database management system. Basically, DBMS or simply known as “database management system” is a system software for creating and managing databases. One thing about the DBMS is that it actually provides users and programmers with a systematic way to create, retrieve, update and manage data. About the DBMS itself, one thing that we should know is that DBMS actually makes it possible for end users to create, read, update and even delete data in a database. Also, the DBMS basically serves as an interface between the database and end users or application programs, ensuring that data is consistently organized and remains easily accessible. In fact, the DBMS actually brings one of the biggest advantages and one of them is it lets end users and application programmers access and use the same data while managing data integrity which basically means that the data is protected and maintained well.

Besides, there’s types of Database management System including RDBMS and Non Relational or NoSQL (complex). A RDBMS or simply known as “Relational Database management system” is database in a tabular form (tables). Data can be accessed or reassembled in many different ways without having to reorganize the database tables. Here you can see the difference between RDBMS vs No SQL below.

Additionally, I also learned about business intelligent process. In terms of business intelligent process, one thing that we should know is about business intelligent (capturing), business intelligent (analyzing), and data mining and here is the explanation below.

1. Business intelligent (capturing)

• Internal source (Data warehouse is a database that stores current and historical data from different department)
• External source
• The two sources then combined by a software called Hadoop and break it down to analyst

2. Business intelligent (analyzing)

• Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) performs multidimensional analysis of business data and provides the capability for complex calculations, trend analysis, and sophisticated data modeling.
• OLAP supports multidimensional data analysis, enabling users to view the same data in different ways using multiple dimensions

3. Data mining

• Examining databases (deeper) in order to generate new information and pattern to predict future behavior for decision making.
• Data mining provides insights into corporate data that cannot be obtained with OLAP

Week 9 – IT Infrastructure & Emerging Technologies

Hi everyone! On this blog, I would like to share to you guys about what I have learned and understood about IT infrastructure and emerging technologies. Basically, Information technology infrastructure is simply defined as a set of information technology (IT) components that are generally the foundation of an IT service which typically physical components, such as computer, networking hardware and facilities, but also various software and network components.

In class, what I also learned about is the type of network topology as it is pictured below.

In general, there are seven major components that actually must be coordinated to provide the firm with a coherent IT infrastructure and here is the picture below.

Besides, what I also learned in week 8 is to know more about Java, HTML and HTML5. And here is the explanation as it is described below.

• Java is a programming language that is object oriented for web environment and usually, the page design in Java language is interactive. In fact, Java is actually used to create small applications that can run in browser.
• HTML or simply known as “Hypertext Markup Language”. Basically, HTML is generally a page description language for specifying how text, graphics, video, and sound are placed on a Web page. And in fact, it is actually used to develop only Static page.
• HTML5. Basically, HTML5 is actually the upgrade of HTML and it is also similar to Java.

Moreover, I also learned about SOA or simply known as “service oriented architecture”. SOA or known as “service oriented architecture” is basically set of self-contained services that communicate with each other to create a working software application. And one thing to know about is that web service is actually an example of SOA.

Also, management issues. In class, I learned that there is still management issues as we all know that it generally deals with different platform, software and infrastructure change. Besides, it also deals with managing and control Investment cost and even how much should we spend on IT Infrastructure. And here is the things that we usually consider about, especially in firm IT service and infrastructure, such as:

• Market demand
• Business strategy
• IT strategy and cost
• IT assessment
• Competitor IT services
• Competitor IT investment

Week 7 – The revision of our analysis on De beers

On my previous blog, I have discussed about our analysis on De beers in terms of Five Forces analysis, value chain, core competencies, and how information system has helped De beer’s business. However, my friend and I still realized that we still made some mistakes on our previous analysis. Therefore, we decided to revise it again and below is our analysis on De beers after we revised it and let’s get started with the first one which is from five forces analysis and De beers value chain.

And about De beer’s core competency, we have found that De beers is so expertise in the diamond industry which makes it as De beer’s core competency. In fact, De beers has an outstanding diamond expertise as they have a long history to develop unique and innovative of their jewelry design since the creation of De Beers Diamond Jewelers in 2001. Moreover, this group also has become the world’s leading diamond company, especially with unrivalled expertise in the exploration and mining of diamonds throughout the world. In addition, De beers is also often being said as the one that is able to develop a beautiful and iconic new jewelry design as it is commonly designed with a unique and so architecturally elegant design as De beers also has an advanced technology to produce diamonds with the same quality.

Moreover, we all know that De beers delivers more than a third of the world’s diamonds, and  as the world’s largest diamond supplier, we all know that it is very necessary for them to have a supporting tool that can help them to keep their operation safe, secure, and well connected. In fact, we have found that De beers has used GIS for over twelve years in which it primarily functions in their exploration division and the first installation of GIS was actually in their exploration group where it now has more than 200 users with additional users in other divisions, including De Beers Marine and Mining, and Mineral Resources Management. Also, we found that GIS is actually directly linked to the Prospecting Information System as it will play an important role in the integration and one of the main goal or objective that we should know is that it is actually to make sure that all ventures in the De Beers Group Exploration have the same spatial database structure to facilitate information sharing and access to spatial data. In fact, the basis of the spatial database will actually utilize ESRI’s ArcSDE to manage spatial data distribution. Moreover, the enterprise application being designed for initial implementation is simply called as “the prospecting information management system” that will have responsible for providing prospecting information, and also generating a Personal Geodatabase for field usage and analysis.

Week 6 – The Analysis of De Beers

On my previous blog, I have discussed about 5 forces that simply as a tool that used for analyzing competition of a business. As a student, learning a theory is not enough without practice and I strongly believe that it is better for us to learn also about how to apply those five forces in analyzing a company’s business environment. Based on the title of this blog, my friend and I have decided to choose De beers as we believe that De beers has a strong a value of sustainability and so expertise in the diamond industry, also. All necessary information actually already explained in our paper, and what I am going to share to you is about the information that basically contains Five Forces analysis, value chain, core competencies, and how information system has helped De beer’s business. First of all, let me show you the Five Forces analysis and De beers value chain as followed.

Moreover, about De beer’s core competencies, we have found that there are three strong core competencies that De beers has, including;

1. Expertise in the diamond industry. Besides, De beers has also introduced iconic slogan which is called “Diamond is Forever” as one of the best and brilliant concept that making it one of the successful campaign in history even also as the top advertising slogan of the past century. In fact, De beers has successfully dominated in the global diamond industry as they always a couple steps ahead of their competition and one thing that we should know is that De beers actually has the website information that very useful to allow the users to get the information about what is De beer’s expertise and product offerings as this website information can be said to be a promotional tool to increase size of their new customers.
3. Have relationships with foreign governments. In fact, De beers has already achieved the competitive advantage in the diamond industry through the implementation of cartel competition. In addition, De beers also gained the competitive advantage by expanding their supply chain as they emphasize their market dominance in every stage of their supply chain and be able to increase their profits like they could continue to generate the profits in the section of supply chains by vertically integrating their supply chain, but also expanding their business to get profits at the wholesaler and retailer levels. Actually, one thing we should know in here is that De beers actually have effective mutually relationships with foreign governments and of course, we can say that it will be easier for De beers to achieve the competitive advantage in terms of securing access to natural resources and positions in the cartel.

What I have learned in week 5

Hi everyone! On this blog, I am going to share to you about what I have learned and understood about information system, organization, and strategy. Firstly, let me start it with five forces that generally used to analyze the competitiveness of your business environment and how those five forces can affect your long-term profitability. In addition, this Porter’s five forces actually can be powerful tool and highly recommended to become business strategy tool as it helps you to achieve the competitiveness and help you to avoid taking wrong steps in the future. In general, there are five forces that including competitive rivalry, supplier power, buyer power, threat of substitution, and threat of new entry. First of all, let me start it with the first one which is competitive rivalry. Competitive rivalry basically means that it is more discussing about how many rivals do you have and how good is the quality of their products or services with yours? One thing that you’d better know is that if the rivalry is so intense, companies can generally be able to attract more customers by giving special price and even high-impact marketing campaign as we all know that there is a chance where your suppliers and buyers can go and look for another if they do not get a good deal from you. However, if the competitive rivalry is low like no one is doing what you do now, then you will be considered as the ones which have tremendous strength and healthy profits as well. Secondly, supplier power. Supplier power basically refers to how easy is it for your suppliers to increase their prices like it is determined by how many potential suppliers do you have, how unique is the product or service that they provide, and how expensive would it be to switch from one supplier to another? It generally means that if you have more to choose from, it will be easily for you to choose another alternative. However, if you have small number of suppliers, of course there is a chance where you will keep relying on them and the more likely you will be charged more by them as it also can affect your profit. Thirdly, buyer power. Buyer power is basically about how many buyers are there, how much their orders and how much would it cost them to switch from your products and services to those of a rival? And it simply means that if it comes to smart customers, they will have more power and your strength will increase if you have a lot of customers. Next one is threat of substitution. Threat of substitution simply refers to the substitution performance and basically it also refers to the possibility that your customers find different ways of doing what you do. Lastly, Threat of new entry. Threat of new entry is basically more like how easy is it to have a foothold in your sector market, how much would it cost, and how tightly is your sector regulated? Besides, one thing that we have to know about threat of new entry is it also refers to the cost of entry which is more like setting the cost and it will be better to have specialist knowledge and economic scales as it is very important thing to reduce the unit cost and economic cost by producing enlarge quantity.

In addition, I learned that knowing information system strategy is also an important thing to be learnt and actually there are several things we must know regarding this one such as low cost leadership, product differentiation, focus in market niche which generally means to focus on a specific target, and increase switching cost for customers as well. In short, information system is actually just a supporting tool to maintain and achieve the competitive advantage. We all know that value chain method is also very important thing to be known as it is generally about the analyzes on what will you do next to the company and talking about this thing, it is better if we also talk about a core competency as it is a MUST in businesses because it can provide value to customers and also open door to new markets.

What I have learned in week 4

Hi everyone! On this blog, I am going to share to you about what I have learned and understood about ethical and social issues in information system. First of all, let’s get started with what is the definition of ethics. We all generally know that ethics is basically a branch of philosophy that refers to the principle of right and wrong conduct in individual’s action. In addition, ethics can be used to make decisions even choices in particular to guide someone’s behaviors and it basically means that ethics can be considered as a guidance for someone to behave and decide what he or she thinks is the right thing to be done. I have learned that there are also three things that we’d better know, such as responsibility, accountability, and liability, and one thing that we must know is that those three are basically connected to each other as responsibility means accepting the duties and obligations that someone has for the decisions he or she makes and someone can be said to be accountability if that person is being responsible of what he or she does and liability if each person knows the consequences and the result about something.

Moreover, I learned that ethical analysis has lots of benefits, such as identify and describe the facts clearly, define the conflict and identify the higher – order values involved, identify the options that you better take, and also identify the potential consequences of your options. One thing that you have to know is that ethical analysis is actually like a systematic approach to find out the right moral decision in a certain situation in order to figure out which options are more effective, so it means that it will give you a kind of accurate picture that basically leads directly to the effect of your decision before you act. Furthermore, another thing that I learned is that it is very necessary for us to know more about information systems and organization strategy. We all know that nowadays information systems can be influential things on the organizations as information systems generally can increase the efficiency and management of an organization. In addition, talking about organizations, we all know that organizations are supposed to be bureaucracies, professional, structured, and basically one thing that we have to know is that to keep fit in in business environment is a very important thing to be considered like it would be great if such things like technology, social and cultural, and so on will be adjusted in business environment.

What I have learned in week 3

Hi everyone! On this blog, I would like to share about what I just learned and understood about making good flowcharts in terms of management information system. We all know that flowchart is about a visual representation that describes the sequence of steps and decisions needed in particular to perform a workflow or process. I strongly believe that the existence of flowchart is very important thing to make common people understand about how the work should be performed from the beginning until the end of the process.

First of all, let me share you our work process which is about the process of enrollment for new semester in President University. Basically, my friend and I from group 3 have decided to explain about the process of enrollment for new semester by using president university information system and below is the first version of ours before the revision.

Based on our flowchart above, we from group 3 realized that our previous flowchart still needs to be revised and improved as well to make our work process more clearly and easy to understand. That is why, my friend and I would like to show you our newest process about how to enroll new semester by using president university information system as we strongly believe that it will be more easily for common students to follow and understand compared to the previous one. Below is the new version of ours after we revised it.

Based on our newest process above, I learned that to give more details in every step of the process from the start until the end is a MUST in order to make common people easily understand about how the work should be performed from the beginning until the end of the process.  And besides, there is also another thing that we have to consider and it is about how to use flowchart symbol correctly. We all know that every special shape in flowcharts actually has different types of actions or steps in a process. Therefore, what I have already learned so far is that to give more details in every step of the process, and know each meaning of its flowchart symbol is a very important thing to be known, especially in terms of management information system. I personally believe that if we want to make the work process in a correct way,  it has to be more detailed, clearly, and also easy to understand by common people so that our work process does not make any confusions. What I just learned about social business & collaboration

Hi everyone! On this blog, I would like to share about what I have already learned and understood in the second meeting with Mr. Roy in enterprise resource planning subject.

First of all, let me start with what is a collaboration and how important is a collaboration in the organization. Based on what I have learned in our second meeting is that the collaboration is simply the process of two or more people that working together to achieve the common goal by sharing their ideas and skills as well. In my opinion, the collaboration is very important thing as I believe that the collaboration between two or more people can provide the good opportunity to complement each other by filling the gap that you are not good at. There are actually so many benefits that can be got by doing the collaboration and one thing that I have already learnt so far is that doing such a collaboration is actually very important thing to do because it can increase the efficiency, accomplish the project in relatively less time, and make better solutions or decision for company’s long term, also.

Moreover, Mr. Roy has also gave us lots of explanations about business process management. Business process is generally the collection of activities required to produce a product or service between each division and basically, business process is also often visualized by a flowchart that describes a sequence of activities. Besides, there are actually five-step process that we have to know first in terms of business process management cycle which started with designing -> modeling -> executing -> monitoring -> and optimizing. Overall, there are actually so many things that I have learnt so far from this second meeting with Mr. Roy and the main objective of this lesson is there are so many benefits that can be got by doing a collaboration and social business, including increasing the productivity and efficiency, making quality or innovative products or services, increasing in sales and profits, and even making better solutions or decisions for company’s long term. I strongly believe that everything has changed with time like technology, innovation, creativity and one thing that I learnt from Mr. Roy’s explanation is that today’s business is about information sharing as technology has grown up with time where everything seems so simple with the existence of Internet like it is very easy to connect each other or even do their business from a different country. That is why, all that I want to share is the importance of doing collaboration really matters in the organization and I personally would like to say that the collaboration is a good thing to do as it facilitates the cooperation which it is very important thing to do in order to gain the competitive advantage and meet company’s objectives in the long term as well.

Hi everyone! My name is Jonathan Andianto and I’m 20 years old. I am from Lippo Cikarang. I am a management student at President University batch 2016 and I chose International Business as my concentration. I am currently in a third year and a little bit about me, there are actually several things I like doing in my everyday life  and some of them are going swimming, watching lots of movies, reading and listening to the music.

First of all, I would like to say that I am so grateful I can study in President University. During my university life, I have learned lots of important things since I started my journey in President University. You might want to ask me a question like “What is the most memorable lesson that you can get when you study in President University? To be honest, there are two memorable lessons that I got when studying in President University. First, I can develop myself to be a better person. Before I entered President University, I did not like to meet new people because since I was in senior high school, I used to spend my hours in front of my computer like playing games, watching lots of videos on YouTube, reading news on the internet, and so on. But, everything has changed when I entered President University and I started to become an outgoing person and tried to connect with people as much as I could by joining the organization in President University. At first, it was so difficult for me to make a good impression when meeting new people. However, everything has changed when I joined one of the organization called COOL or simply known as “community of love”. Aside from being an outgoing person, I also learnt to be a responsible and reliable person. Since I was in senior high school, I was not a responsible person and I used to procrastinate everything that should be done on time. However, everything has changed when I joined this organization and I started to become a responsible person and I also can be relied by all of the members in the organization. Secondly, I can be the person that has a dream in life. Since I was in senior high school, I actually did not have a clear vision on what I want to be in the future. I used to think that I just wanted to get a good grade when I was in senior high school. However, everything has also changed when I came to President University. I was so inspired and motivated since I joined the welcoming ceremony that was led directly by the rector of President University. On that day, I learned lots of important things and it really was the first time I realized that I must have a dream in life on what I want to be in the future. As I am a management student who chose International Business as my concentration, my dream is to become an entrepreneur and I really want to have my own business in the future. Overall, based on what I have been through during my university life in President University is the moment that I will not forget in my life. I am so glad that I can study and also be able to build my character at the same time in this prestigious university.

As a third year student at President University, I personally would like to say that every subject that I have been through from the first semester until now is getting more exciting and more challenging. Like always, in the first day I entered the seventh semester, I always keep telling myself to start it with full of spirit and be ready to welcome all the subjects in this semester including Enterprise Resource Planning subject with Mr. Roy. At first, I had no idea about this subject and so many questions that crossed my mind like what is enterprise resource planning subject all about. But, everything has changed when Mr. Roy explained and I have finally got a better understanding and I am so glad I can have the opportunity to learn this subject. In the first of our meeting with Mr. Roy, he explained so many things that related to this subject and he also opened this subject by telling us that everything in this world has changed since the technology is increasingly sophisticated and nowadays, everything seems so simple because of the Internet like it is very easy for us to connect with other people even in a different country. After that, he also explained about management information system or simply known as “MIS”. The first thing that I learned about that is management information system is a tool that used for gathering information, and also can be used for decision making. I strongly believe that MIS is very important tool and even can be a helpful tool as MIS is able to help a lot in providing management with needed information to plan and make decisions as well. Besides, I also strongly believe that management information system is actually not just about gathering information but it also can be used to increase the value and profits of the business and if we talk about management information system, we will also have to talk about the process of MIS itself. Based on what I learned from Mr. Roy’s explanation, there are three steps in the process of MIS which started with data gathering -> data processing -> and information that we have to know before going any further. To summarize, there is also one thing that we have to know that MIS is actually not just about gathering information, but it is more than that. I strongly believe that MIS can lead to achieve the goal of the company and it also can give another good results, including develop new idea or new product, and even also can be used to analyze cost and increase the profit for the company.
